Rutter’s Requiem
to be Performed on March 28
The combined choirs of the United Church in Walpole and the First Parish of Westwood, United Church, will present John Rutter’s Requiem on Sunday, March 28, at 3:00 PM. The performance will be held at the United Church in Walpole, 30 Common Street, Walpole, MA. A reception will follow in the church hall, which all are cordially invited to attend. A free-will offering will be taken to benefit the music programs of both churches, as well as the earthquake victims of Haiti and Chile.
Emily Curtin Culler will be the soprano soloist, and Karen Westerfield Tucker will be the organist. Ms. Culler holds a Master of Music degree in vocal performance from Boston University and sings professionally in the greater Boston area. Dr. Tucker is a professor in the BU School of Theology and also the organist at First Parish. The Senior Choir of First Parish in Westwood is directed by Joshua Nannestad, who is the Director of Choral Activities at Milford High School and a doctoral student in conducting at Boston University.
The United Church Chancel Choir is directed by Nathan Zullinger, who will also conduct the performance. Mr. Zullinger has been at United Church for five years and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in conducting.
John Rutter’s Requiem, completed in 1985, has quickly become a popular work with churches and community choruses in the U.S. and the United Kingdom. The framework is taken from the traditional Latin Requiem Mass, but Rutter also incorporates passages from the Psalms and the Book of Common Prayer. The composer’s message is one of comfort and hope in the midst of loss.
