Thirteen youth and four chaperones left from Walpole ’s United Church on Sunday, July 29 at 4AM to head for
Hyde County, North Carolina for a five day mission trip with YouthWorks. Youthworks is a non-profit group that sets up mission trips/work projects and provides food & shelter all over the country for the purpose of providing worthwhile mission work and spiritual enrichment for high school youth.
Hyde
County
is an extremely rural and poverty stricken area near the outer banks and Pimlico Sound. There is no industry, other than some crab and shrimp fishing. The area has been hard hit by hurricanes in recent years. The group did a lot of painting, mold removal and refurbishment of homes. They also spent time visiting people at a local nursing home, day program for mentally handicapped adults, and a vacation bible school program for children. Issues of poverty, race, education, and opportunity were illustrated to the kids every day as they worked among the people of
Hyde
County.
On the last day in North Carolina they had a treat and drove to the beach on the Outer Banks in Nag’s Head, NC. Great surf and warm water!!!
