Casavant-Freres Pipe Organ (1998)
The current Casavant-Freres Pipe Organ, Opus 3766, includes pipes from at least three of the four organs that have been used by United Church and the three congregations that joined to form our present church (Congregational, Unitarian and Methodist).
The first organ of record dates to 1837 and was built by George Jardine and Son of New York City for the Congregational Church on East Street. In 1851 a small, hand pumped, one manual organ was built by Elias and George Hook (Opus 121) for $675. It was placed in the balcony of the Unitarian Church, just a few years after the church was moved to the present site in 1839.
Historical records also mention two manual Hutchings, which could have been in the Methodist Church before the merger in 1927.
In September 1939, just 12 years after the merger of the three Walpole churches, a contract was signed with M.P. Moller, Inc., of Hagerstown, MD. This organ had 800-900 pipes, and was built for $3,750.00. It was dedicated on October 27, 1940. In 1973 this organ was rebuilt by the Kinsey-Angerstein Company.
The current Casavant-Freres organ was dedicated on September 27, 1998. Rev. Jeffrey Larsen led the dedication service and Ann Totten, Organist and Choir Director, presided at the new organ. Dedication activities included recitals by Ms. Totten and John Finney of Wellesley Hills Congregational Church.
The current organ contains approximately 600 pipes of the previous Moller, as well as components of the Hook and Hutchings organs and possibly some of the Jardine. Including pieces of our past in the new organ gives us an on-going connection to our heritage.
